ERIK AUSTIN DEERLY
Erik works as
media artist,
composer, and
designer. He authors interactive work for web, performance, and installation. He also creates soundtracks for film, dance, and video. Erik is a multi-instrumentalist who has been composing and recording music since 1980. He studied music composition with
Dr. Paul Steg, ethnomusicology with
Dr. Han Kuo-Huang, and saxophone with
Joe Daley,
Vernice “Bunky” Green, and
Steve Duke.
Erik is the son of artist Kenneth Deerly (designer & painter), and grandson to jazz musicians Margie Little (singer) and James Austin Little (saxophonist). Erik wrote his first song at the age of four. This song was later adapted and arranged by Erik and band co-leader
Brian Deck to be included on the group’s 1992 “Baling Wire & Bubble Gum” album (Every Good Boy, Emigré Music).
Erik’s work has been seen and heard world-wide and currently includes ten full-length music releases, four video shorts, a full-length independent film soundtrack, three collaborative dance scores, two multi-screen video/audio installations, and a growing series of Gicleé broadsides. His work has earned a Webby nomination (1999), two Addy Awards (1988 & 1989), and a South by Southwest National Interactive Design Award (2002, first place).
Erik holds a Bachelor of Music in Composition from Northern Illinois University and a Master of Fine Arts in New Media from Columbia College Chicago. He is Publishing Editor of
Burning Word Literary Journal. He serves as Assistant Professor and Director of New Media at
Indiana University Kokomo.
